World Figure of Public Speaking: Hillary Clinton
Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois,
going on to earn her law degree from Yale University. She married fellow law
school graduate Bill Clinton in 1975. She later served as first lady from 1993
to 2001, and then as a U.S. senator from 2001 to 2009. Just days after Hillary
Clinton left her post as secretary of state in early 2013, she assembled a
group of longtime female aides to discuss what she wanted to do as she
contemplated another presidential run. She told them she wanted to address
issues affecting women and girls while at the Clinton Foundation. But Mrs.
Clinton also wanted to make sure that her effort were rooted around an
important moment of her own career, the speech she delivered on Sept. 5, 1995,
in a surburb of Beijing, focusing on women’s right issues.
What we are learning
around the world is that if women are healthy and educated, their families will
flourish. If women are free from violence, their families will flourish. If
women have chance to work and earn as full and equal partners in society, their
families will flourish. And when families flourish, communities and nation do
as well. That is why every woman, every man, every child, every family, and
every nation on this planet does have a stake in the discussion that takes
place here. -Hilary Clinton, Beijing 5 Sept 1995
Hillary Clinton’s speech in Beijing greatly illustrates
the situation of woman at that time and even now. There are many desires that
are still not even realized. Things that are related to gender equality are
still debated and are sensitive talk for some people. Finally, hopefully there
will be more and more young figures appearing who can voice their aspirations
to change people’s minds in general about gender equality.
